Like it’s name, Sloppy Joes are messy, but oh so tangy and delicious! It’s doesn’t have to be only for kids! By making it from scratch you can add some sophistication (pinky up) to this tasty simple meal.
This recipe came about because I was craving Sloppy Joes and bought all the ingredients, save one. I thought I had a flavor packet at home… so I didn’t buy one at the store. Oops!
So I thought, “Hmm, I’m sure that this is something I can make myself? Surely?” I searched online and combined about 4 different recipes to get one that suited my taste buds.
Sloppy Joes
Servings 4
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- ¼ cup ketchup
- ⅓ cup water
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp mustard
- ½ tbsp chili powder
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp pepper
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 cooking onion diced
- 2 cloves garlic
- ¼ cup red pepper diced
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 lb ground beef
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan.
- Saute onion, garlic, and bell pepper for 3 minutes on medium.
- Fry ground beef and cook until browned.
- Add tomato paste and let cook for 2 minutes.
- Add water, worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, vinegar, and spices.
- Stir till combined and let cook on medium till bubbling and turn down to low.
- Let simmer 10 minutes. Add more water if sauce gets too thick, 1 tbsp at a time till desired consistency.
- Serve on a hamburger bun.
